Sargent Shriver Award 2009

  E. Jackson ("Jack") Allison, Jr., MD/MPH

Jack's "Third PCV Goal" is "Music With A Message"

The following is the John W Strain III ("JWS") Nomination Form, Nomination Letter and additional material in support of the Nomination of E. Jackson ("Jack") Allison, Jr., MD/MPH, for the National Peace Corps Association's annual Sargent Shriver Award for 2009. The information focuses on Jack's body of work following his time as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer in Malawi, Central Africa, during the years from August 1966 through his departure from Malawi in 1969.

Following an outstanding contribution to Malawi and his return to the States, Jack completed a very successful career in several forms of pubic health, medicine and academics, which are  very well documented in Jack's detailed CV and summarized in the JWS Nomination Letter.

In addition to his career in medicine and academics, Jack made major contributions to Malawi and to this country with his songs and music under the aegis of "Music With A Message".

It started with the surprise # 1 ranking for Ufa wa Mtedza (Peanut Flour in your babies porridge) on the only radio station in Malawi for three and one half years. Jack wrote and preformed many songs, all along the Public Health path while in Malawi, as a Volunteer, throughout his career and, now, in retirement.

Two forms of Ufa are linked below, one is a movie with slides of Malawi and the children who benefited from Ufa, which is running over the song and, after that, just the song itself.

Jack's skills, talent and energy did not stop there, as is shown in the links to various documents, music and photographs below. In 1994, he wrote six songs about HIV/AIDS prevention, care and compassion, linked below. He returned to Malawi to perform them and Ufa from the north to the south of the country, which is about the size of the state of California.

Also included are his songs about Homeless Veterans and about welcoming home our American War Heroes from the Middle East.
