In August of 1966 a group of some forty-seven folks assembled at the University of California at San Diego, located in beautiful La Jolla, California, for Peace Corps Training for a Public Health Program in the Eastern Region of Nigeria. We studied several Nigerian languages, area studies, public health, how to off chickens with our bear hands, lived in old Army barracks and surfed, especially me. During this time, the Biafra War was intensifying daily. At the end of our training period, it was decided to not go to Nigeria. Part of the 'family' was diverted to Niger, for a anti-natal program.

The rest sent to Puerto Rico's Camp Radley, for one month's intensive 'reprogramming' to prepare for Malawi. That group was further divided into several assignments, child nutrition, secondary education, pharmacy, and sports development. Here are some pictures from training and a few from a party in Lilongwe. Enjoy!
